Christopher Hoadley (Lab Director) Dr. Chris Hoadley is associate professor in the Educational Communication and Technology Program, the Games for Learning Program, and the Program in Digital Media Design for Learning at NYU, and a Program Director at the US National Science Foundation. He has over 35 years experience designing and building educational technology, and has conducted research on technology, learning, and collaboration for 25 years. Currently his research focuses on collaborative technologies and computer support for cooperative learning (CSCL). Hoadley is the director of dolcelab, the Laboratory for Design Of Learning, Collaboration & Experience.
Sameer Honwad (Associate Lab Director) Dr. Sameer Honwad is a National Academy of Education/Spencer Foundation Fellow and a visiting scholar/adjunct faculty in the Educational Communication and Technology Program. Honwad has degrees in ecology and education, and studies indigenous and cross-cultural learning especially with respect to sustainability and community decisionmaking. He has previously held postdoctoral positions at Rutgers University and the New York Hall of Science.
Dixie Ching Dixie Ching is a PhD student in the Educational Communication and Technology program at NYU and a member of the Games for Learning Institute, a multi-university research consortium that develops STEM games for middle school students. Dixie was on the team that was awarded the Collegiate and Impact prizes at the 2011 National STEM Video Game Challenge for their “Numbaland Island” math fluency games, including Battleship Numberline. She is also on the Steering Committee of the Humanities, Art, Science, and Technology Advanced Collaboratory.
Sharon Favaro (Affiliated Faculty) Sharon Favaro is the Digital Services Librarian at Seton Hall University in South Orange, NJ, USA.  Her  research primarily focuses on educational technology, instructional design, user centered design, and  scholarly communications.   Sharon has an M.A. in Educational Communication and Technology from New York University and M.L.I.S, from Rutgers University.

AJ Kelton is the Director of Emerging & Instructional Technology for the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Montclair State University in New Jersey.  He is very involved in virtual worlds for education, founded EDUCAUSE’s Virtual Worlds Constituent Group, and is the Founder and Chief Moderator of the Virtual Worlds Education Roundtable (  He also co-founded the EDUCAUSE Games and Learning Constituent Group. AJ is a doctoral student in the Educational Communication and Technology program at New York University.

Valerie Lundy-Wagner (Affiliated Faculty) Dr. Valerie Lundy-Wagner is primarily interested in bachelor’s degree completion, and what colleges and universities can do to better conceptualize and enact programs and policies that help students persist. Her work includes theoretical, historical, as well as more traditionally qualitative and quantitative research. A former engineer, Valerie’s research interests focus largely on postsecondary science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) research, but also minority-serving institutions (especially, historically Black colleges and universities), the intersection of ethnicity/race, class and gender, as well as academic advising.

Kacie Kinzer is an interactive artist and designer interested in how technology can redefine the narratives of everyday life. Often, this involves creating systems that involve social interaction, participation, and collaboration in contexts ranging from museums to the city street. Her work is part of the permanent collection in the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. She is currently exploring learning in “maker culture” with Chris Hoadley.

Gabriela Richard is an ABD doctoral candidate (and adjunct instructor) whose research focuses on understanding the intersection between culture, experience, media and learning.  She is finishing her dissertation on gender, intersectionality and video game culture, which takes an interdisciplinary approach to understanding gender (and its intersections with ethnicity and sexuality) as reflexively experienced in video game culture and online communities.  She has received funding from the National Science Foundation and the American Association of University Women in support of her research.  She has a master’s from the Interactive Telecommunications Program and an undergraduate degree in media, culture and communication.  She is also an adjunct instructor at ECT, teaching the Games and Play in Education graduate course she initially designed with Chris Hoadley.
